Complex Ovarian Cysts | Ovarian Cysts

The diagnostic tests associated with the confirmation of whether the ovarian cyst is ruptured or not vary. The tests conducted by an emergency physician will be different from those done by a gynecologist. The tests to check for an intact ovarian cyst are also the same. The first step taken by the team in the emergency is to stabilize the patient. It is then followed by the diagnosis of the torn ovarian cyst. The smoothness of the procedure entirely depends upon the condition of the patient in terms of stability.

The blood test is performed in the patient to calibrate the current condition of her. There are several components of the blood test. Hematocrit is a test done to calculate the volume of blood occupied by the red blood corpuscles (RBC) in the patient’s body. Anemia is diagnosed in case of a low hematocrit. This can be attributed to internal bleeding. The doctor may examine the hemoglobin levels in the patient to check for hemorrhage which is possible if the findings are low.

The second test is for the White blood corpuscles (WBC). The protection of the body from the various infections that can happen is undertaken by the white blood corpuscles. The count of these is normal or slightly increased in case of un-ruptured ovarian cyst or an irregular menstrual cycle. Condition of Leukocytosis is when there is an excessive increase in the count of the WBCs. Bacterial infection, stress or trauma can happen due to it. Prothrombin Time, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time and International Normalized Ratio are the other properties of the blood that are measured with the tests that are conducted. CA 125 antigen test is also done indicating conditions of endometriosis, a malignant ovarian cyst or a pelvic inflmmatory disease. These tests are done only in emergency situations and are time consuming. They take as much as 24 hours or 1 day before the results can be calibrated.

The tests for pregnancy can also be conducted by the doctors. The reason is that the symptoms related to pregnancy and of a ruptured ovarian cyst is similar. The confirmation for pregnancy comes from the presence of the Human Chorionic Growth Hormone (HCG) in the blood of the patient. Analysis of the urine samples can be done on demand of the doctor as an added measure. The presence of blood or pus in the urine sample can lead to the diagnosis of infected or an inflamed ovary. There is also a possibility of a ruptured ovarian cyst.

The use of technology is beneficiary in such circumstances. Ultrasonography is used in the diagnosis of an ovarian cyst. The use of Ultrasonography helps in calibrating the size, location, structure and the other features associated with it. It also confirms pregnancy, which is an added bonus. Specific types of ultrasounds can be used to check the amount of blood flow in the ovary. The size and the location of the ovarian cyst can lead to twisted ovaries which lead to the lack of flow of blood. CT or Computerized Tomography scans is another technique that can be used by the doctor.

Unstable conditions can lead to the doctor performing Culdocentesis. This is also doen if there is no access to Ultrasonography. In this process, a needle is inserted into the abdomen to check for the presence of fluids. In case they are present, it is a case of a ruptured ovarian cyst. It can also be due to inflammation of the liver or Carcinoma.

The process of Laparoscopy can also be performed. Under this process, three small incisions are made in the abdomen of the patient. Various instruments are then inserted into these holes to carry out the inspection work. Surgery, if needed, can also be done with the help of Laparoscopy.

The doctor’s main aim in the whole process is to determine the existence of a ruptured ovarian cyst. This disease is life threatening due to which proper and timely medical action is advised failure to meet which can lead to further complications.
